A remote wooded island in the Bay of Ice, north of Deepwood Motte and south of the Frozen Shore, held by House Mormont. The seat is no castle but a hall of huge logs behind an earthen palisade, a carved bear above the door. It is rich in bears and trees and poor in aught else.
The Women of the Island
Save for a few crofters, the folk of the island live along the coasts and fish the seas, and while the men were at sea the ironborn and the free folk of the Frozen Shore came reaving. The defense fell to the women who remained, and has fallen to them so long that every Mormont girl is raised to the axe as her brothers are. Dacey Mormont died beside her king at the Red Wedding.
Won and Lost and Won Again
House Woodfoot ruled here before the ironborn took the island, and Ravos Hoare reaved from it until Theon Stark drove the ironmen out and slew him. King Rodrik Stark is said to have won it back in a wrestling match and granted it to House Mormont, a tale some maesters credit and others do not.
